Earlier this month the OSC (Ontario Securities Commission) launched the redesign of their Web site that a few of us here at iStudio were involved in. The design, fluid in nature, is very clean and really works with the amount and type of content that is on the site.
Although we normally stay away from fluid layouts – due to the restrictions that are placed on the designer – this one turned out wonderfully. Huge ‘props’ go to our lead designer on this project.
My part in the project was developing the HTML templates which were a bit more complicated than usual due to the fluid nature of the layout. Adding to the complexity was the fact that templates needed to be compatible with IE6, due to the relatively high volume of users with that browser on the site.
I ended up going with a layout technique circa 2006 that was documented on A List Apart which worked for the most part with the exception of a minor workaround to get things looking right in IE6.
