A pretty exciting weekend, to say the least as Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings in game seven to take home their third Stanley Cup, and first since 1992.
Whether it was fatigue or just an overwhelming effort by the Penguins, but the Red Wings did not play nearly good enough to win. In fact, not counting the third period, this had to be one of their worst efforts in quite some time. Their forward rush attack was disjointed and they could never establish good puck possession in the Penguin’s zone. Plus, to make matters worse for them, the Penguins were doing everthing right in their end – dumping the puck in on almost every opportunity and then laying on the body to get it (puck) back to establish their cycle game.
In the end, the score (2-1) was closer than what the game really was – a bit of a fluke goal by Jon Ericsson made things a bit closer at the end.
One of the sweetest parts of this victory was the fact that Marian Hossa, who thought he was Mr. Smarty Pants in the off season by rejecting the Pengusin rich offer to go play with the Red Wings, failed in his bid to win his first cup. He’s got to be feeling foolish and frustrated right about now, you’ve got to think…
